The topkpop Index

Transparent by design.

One score from 0 to 100, built from things anyone can check. No AI and no editor picks. We use set weights, let older activity fade, and show how the score is made.

The v1 Song / Release Index tracks each song by its official music video. It uses YouTube, Apple Music, Circle Chart, Billboard Global 200, music-show wins, and touring activity. Spotify is planned. Missing data is left out, and the other weights are adjusted.

Two views, one engine

Song / Release Index

What is hot right now. Recent activity counts more, so a comeback can rise fast and settle over roughly two to three weeks.

Artist Index

A steadier view of an artist. It combines the artist's best song with audience, video, wins, and touring data.

All-time artist ranking

The All-time tab moves slowly. It is separate from the live Song and Artist scores. It leans mostly on how far an artist's songs have reached, with past chart success and music-show and award wins as smaller factors.

We add up the latest total YouTube views for each tracked video, then put the results on the same scale so one huge catalog cannot drown out every other signal. How far an artist's songs have reached is the biggest factor. If we do not have that data yet, it counts as zero. Chart appearances and music-show wins use the history available to us. If one is missing, the other can count for more.

One honest caveat: we add more chart history over time. Early All-time results lean more on total catalog views than later results will.

Collect → compare → score → rank

01 · Collect

Use the latest successful data for each signal.

02 · Put on one scale

Put each signal on the same 0–100 scale across the artists and songs we track. Missing or old signals are left out. The remaining weights are adjusted, and we show how much info we have.

03 · Let old activity fade

Recent activity counts more. Older view growth and music-show wins fade over roughly seven days.

04 · Add it up

Add the signals with their set weights to make one score from 0 to 100 for each song and artist.

05 · Rank

Compare today with the last daily result and the result from seven days ago. This shows who is up, down, new, or steady.

06 · Save the result

Save a ranked result with its time. Live rankings use the latest result. The weekly topkpop 100 uses the Monday 00:00 KST freeze.

The weights live in one settings file, so we can tune them without changing how the Index works. “Global-fan balanced” is the locked v1 default. Before launch, we will test a known week to make sure the results look familiar to fans and do not show clear data errors.

Frequently asked questions

K-pop answers →
What is the topkpop Index?

The topkpop Index is a score from 0 to 100 for K-pop songs and artists. It uses things anyone can check, gives more weight to recent activity when it makes sense, and saves each result with its time.

How often does the topkpop Index update?

The Index uses the latest successful data in a daily refresh. Each source can update on its own schedule, so the time and amount of info shown with a rank tell you how fresh and complete it is.

Which signals feed the topkpop Index?

The live signals are how fast YouTube views are climbing, Apple Music chart position, Circle Chart position, Billboard Global 200 position, music-show wins, and touring activity for artists. Spotify popularity is planned, not live.

How are missing signals handled?

Missing or old data is left out. We never make it up. The other weights are adjusted, and the result shows how much info went into the score.

Why does a topkpop score change?

Scores change when public sources change or new data arrives. Older activity can also count less over time. A new mix of signals can change how much info we have and how the live score is built.

Is the topkpop Index an official chart?

No. The Index is our score from public data. It is not an official chart, award, or statement from an artist, label, platform, or chart provider.

How is the All-time Index computed?

The All-time Index ranks artists mostly by how far their songs have reached, with past chart success and music-show and award wins as smaller factors. We use total YouTube views for each tracked video. If we do not have catalog data yet, that part counts as zero. We do not pad the score to make up for it. Chart and win counts use the history we have. If one is missing, the other can count for more. We have more chart history over time, so early All-time results lean more on total views.
